I was drowning in piles. Piles and piles and piles of laundry. Every color of the rainbow filling every corner of my bedroom and flooding the floor until there was no carpet left, only pools of t-shirts and shorts and underwear and socks threatening to choke out every breath from my clean-freak body. And I hated EVERY. SINGLE. SECOND of it.
Enough was enough. I was through. I was through being angry. I was through feeling unsettled. I was through having to ignore and step over and wade through the piles and piles of laundry that taunted me in the back of my mind until I’d spend the 4 hours it took to sort and fold and put away all the laundry.
I was DONE. We were getting a new laundry routine and we were getting it NOW!

Our New Laundry Routine
I spent an entire day – an ENTIRE freaking 8 hours!!! – washing, drying, sorting, folding and putting away laundry so that I could start fresh. Start new. Start Over. And then I started a completely different routine.
This is what our routine looks like now.
Wash At Night
Every night, when the kids get ready for bed and change into their jammers, we put their dirty clothes into the washing machine. After the husband and I get changed into our pajamas and are ready for bed, we stick our clothes into the washing machine too and we run the washer.
Dry in the Morning
In the morning, the last thing we do right before we leave the house, is put all the clothes from the washing machine into the dryer and run the dryer.
Fold & Put Away While Dinner is Cooking
When I get home from work, my husband is typically cooking dinner since he gets home before I do. I change out of my work clothes and then get the dried laundry out of the dryer and fold it. The kids put away their laundry and I put my husband’s and my laundry away.
Why I Love This New Routine
I love this new routine. And I love it for a few reasons
- We don’t have piles and piles of laundry in our room anymore! Hallelujah! The piles have disappeared and we can see our floor again and it’s heavenly.
- It only takes 10 minutes to fold and put the laundry away instead of half a day or an entire day to get the laundry done. That’s HOURS more time to do ANYTHING besides laundry, which I’ll celebrate any day!
- The kids can help. They can put their own clothes into the washing machine. They can move the laundry from the washing machine into the dryer. They can fold their clothes and they can put them away. I don’t have to do the entire family’s laundry on my own anymore, and the kids are learning an important lesson in how to do laundry for when they move out into their own homes.
